I don’t agree with the 5+ age recommendation. I assembled it with a 6 year old LEGO lover who is pretty good at instructions and handling small pieces. This kit was too difficult for him to build alone. I had to help, and as a 40+ year old I struggled with some of the steps. Several of the build steps are compound (multi-stage). There are probably some sharp 5 year olds than can handle this but I think overall I’d say this is 6+ minimum with adult help, and 7+ to do solo.

Fun kit overall. The end product had a pretty durable feel, I didn’t worry much about it breaking. I did have to go through and tighten all the parts with adult eyes when it was done. I don’t know how long it will stay together after some abuse, probably will need some rebuilding. The pull-back doesn’t have much strength.

Incomplete Christmas Gift. Cool kits and my son loves building them. Difficulty is appropriate and requires an extra hand with a few pieces-which I appreciate. Unfortunately this kit was incomplete and not discovered until a few hours into his build…. Meccano was unable to send out the replacement part. They offered an inexpensive kit as a solution, but my kid really prefers to have the complete kit that Santa brought. Definitely take the time to check parts list before your kid invests time and then can not complete due to missing pieces. 👎

I was fairly disappointed to find out that the vast majority of the parts are made out of plastic. The back of the box even has a “real metal” advertisement on it but the only parts that were metal were the screws, nuts, the 6 or so washers and the small parts that had a crisp angle to attach two parts together, usually consisting of two to three holes and an angle of 45° or 90°. The old Erector motor has been replaced by a much weaker block of this plastic but has lights incorporated. Lights are white and red for the front and back of a vehicle. Red lights blink like hazard lights when the motor is put into reverse. The gears have also undergone this downgrading process by removing all metal and having a triangular shape that fits the triangular metal rods. The old Allen key set screws have been dropped completely. Gears don’t fit together as nicely and maybe it’s just that I got a smaller set but there seems to be less gear options, whereas the Erector set I owned as a child had a decent selection of gears, including a worm drive gear, and the gears fit together more snug.

Instruction book only has three of the twenty five models in it. The rest have to be accessed online, which shouldn’t be an issue for most people.

To me, it seems they saw how much profit Lego is making by marking up formed plastic and decided that was the more profitable design rather than keeping what set them apart from their closest competitor, which was an all metal piece set with thin plastic pieces to add curved accents or something resembling a windshield. I take solace in the fact that I bought this set instead of the almost ninety dollar set with the crane as the flagship model.

Brilliant kit, haven’t done Meccano since I was 14. Unfortunately on reaching stage 38 there is a missing part. Have contacted Meccano but not heard back.Would have got 5 stars but for the missing part.

Meccano / Spinmaster have been in touch since I wrote the review. Their customer care is brilliant. I no longer had the box,so Couldn’t send the code required. They have let me know that the code is on the handle of the tool. They are now looking at sending me the missing part. You can also download the manual from Spinmaster for all 25 versions of this kit.
So have changed the review mark to the 5 stars it deserves.

Spinmaster have contacted me to inform me that because the kit is an older version they no longer support it so cannot replace the part. Luckily the missing part does not show up so is no big problem.

After a couple of months all the stickers are peeling off and one of the struts at the back of the truck has broken, so it is now useless. Such a shame, Meccano used to be metal and indestructable. I bought this because I thought the quality should be good as it was a Meccano product, my mistake. Junk.

La compré para regalo, pero parece que fue abierta y trae cinta adhesiva mal colocada en todas las tapas, con la caja rota y maltratada. Un fiasco, no puedo regalar esto, me daría vergüenza.

This monster truck looks so cool but that’s as far as it goes. Once built, you’re supposed to be able to play with it due to the pull-back motor. However, it’s not suitable for playing with. No matter what you do, the nuts loosen and the thing constantly falls apart. Also the stickers aren’t adhesive enough and peel off.

Many tears from a little boy who loved his Christmas present but is frustrated by it falling apart. Feel I’ll have to dump it after only a couple of weeks. Such a waste of money.

  9. Jamie Remole

I assembled this with my 5 year old kiddo, who is above average in his mechanical ability. It was a fun thing to do together, but it’s definitely not for a 5/yo to do solo. Too many steps with multiple elements to keep track of at once. I’d think an average 7/yo could do it solo.

In any case, the finished truck is fun to play with, but the hard plastic tires limit the surfaces you can use the pull back feature on. The tires just skid on hardwood floor, so this feature was less awesome than I had hoped it would be. Real rubber tires would be a nice upgrade. The suspension is cool, and a big hit with the kid.

A big problem with this is that the pieces are a bit flimsy. The little teeth inside of the pieces that engages with other parts to hold them together are tiny and weak, and a little rough handling from a kid is enough to break them off. This is a big bummer, as now the truck’s suspension falls apart easily. This is an even bigger bummer, as this is a monster truck that you can’t jump and play very vigorously with. And really, what kind of monster truck is that?

Cool truck, great concept, but weak plastic parts means it’s not getting played with much due to it not holding up. Bummer.

My five year old was so excited to get this for his birthday! His Dad and I sat down to build it with him only to get halfway through and realize it came missing an important piece. My little man was so upset. 😔

  11. Deeviant

I bought this for my monster-truck mad 5yo son to build over Christmas with his grandfather who is a life-long Meccano fan. However, it quickly became apparent that this kit is far too complex for a 5 year old and my son quickly lost interest in it and wandered off back to his Lego where, by comparison, he quickly and easily built a police car kit rated for 5+…

It may be that the 5+ age rating for this Meccano kit has been given for Health & Safety reasons rather than an indication of age suitability.

  12. Deeviant

My son has spent hours building this. He has needed help on some parts as you need more than one set of hands at time to hold it still while you tighten the bolts. My son got all the way to last few steps and was missing a piece. I think this was more down to him building it in multiple rooms. Couldn’t find the missing but and impossible to order replacements so we bought a different kit and just hope it has the piece he needs. I would definitely recommend this. Great advancement from Lego.

No me gusta el hecho de que lo iba a armar y no pude dado a que le faltan piezas.
