I built the other painted P-51 and the whole time I was thinking, “it would be cool if this we a Tuskegee plane, Red Tail. Something Iconic” Then I just happened to look at something and saw this and just had to get it. It costs more than the original, I couldn’t figure out why until I got it delivered. It’s much bigger. It has a few build improvements over the other version, but all in all it’s just sized up and painted different.
Early on I decided I was not going to build the landing gear, so I left it off, only to find out at the last step that the new stand is designed to work landing gear down. I managed to find a way to get it to work and absolutely love this plane.

I’ve assembled 4 wooden kits and 1 metal kit prior to this one. The experience I gained was very helpful in assembling this kit. Make sure you have good tools including a headband magnifier. Take your time with each piece and make it as best you can like each piece is it’s own project. I found having several dowls of various diameters helpful in making the contours required and verified the bends to the attach points to make sure it was right before attaching. Sometimes it is helpful to look forward in the instructions to understand how a particular piece will be attached later. For sure I will order another Metal Earth kit!!!

I find it addictive putting this plane together. If you don’t like puzzles then it will be a daunting task. One of the wheel assemblies broke up despite my precautions. Beside that, it’s been a blast.

I spent hours working on this thing for my son and the tail just snapped on me , ruining the whole thing. The detail is good but you need the patience of Job and the eyesight of Superman to put this together. The whole model is held together by tiny metal tabs that have be fitted exactly through very tiny slots. Then you have to oh so delicately twist or bend the tabs to lock them in place. If you are a jeweler or watchmaker you’ll be fine.

I have built several of the Metal Earth kits (and other brands). They clearly put a lot of effort into these kits, the parts fit together perfectly and if you are a perfectionist, you will be happy with these kits. You can even tell that they use high grade steel…there are no soft spots to mess up your kit. Very happy. I have made glass and brass display boxes for many of my completed kits (See Image).

This model is fantastic and a big step up from the standard metal earth models. Each part fit together quite well and could be attached tightly. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. The finished model is larger and looks much better with the pre painted pieces. It was fun to put together.
