The set typically includes a carefully chosen range of colors that simulate different stages of rust and wear on metal surfaces. This can include hues from light rust to darker shades, simulating fresh to old rust.

I’m well pleased with my purchase.

I’ve used several other “rust kits” and so far, Vallejo Rust and Chipping kit is on the top. I wanted to build a rusted out crawler tow truck… The truck body is polycarbonate, but it doesn’t really matter… plastic, metal and wood, this kit will do the trick. The bumpers and chain are metal and the boom hoist is made from paint sticks! I use alcohol to thin down the paint so it dries fairly quick… Bonus… don’t like how it turned out? Reapply until your happy, but wait for the “rust” to dry before you make your decision.

Does what it says in the tin!

Firstly ill say that i use only Vallejo model air products, they are easy to apply and the colour matching ,especially the RLM series is very accurate.Im looking forward to using this set but unfortunatley the set arrived with one having leaked all over the package and instructions. In my opinion this was a used one.

This offers a really interesting way of creating rust and chipped paint effects really easily on scale models. It does require a little practice to get the technique to create the exact effect you want, but that’s probably true of any new painting/detailing technique you try. Personally, I’ve found the hairspray method to work with varying degrees of success (not to mention, it literally stinks), so I have been looking for another method for creating chipping, etc. Here are some highlights:
    1. All of the paints and chipping medium were extremely easy to airbrush, without the need to dilute – I actually bought a Vallejo thinner just in case, and I didn’t have to use it.
    2. Applying the rust colors worked well with an airbrush, but using a small cosmetics sponge also worked well to give a more mottled look. These paints covered pretty well using the sponge technique as well as airbrushing.
    3. After all of the layers had dried, I had to apply more water to the final top-coat of paint than I thought I would. It then takes a minute or two for the water to start to soak in and loosen up top layer of paint and chipping medium. The only thing to watch here is that it seems like when it goes – it goes. It’s like the water doesn’t absorb and then – bang, paint is coming off. Just be careful not to start scratching too hard or you’ll lose large chunks of paint. Be patient and keep working in small sections at a time and this product works amazingly well.
    4. I experimented with the technique on an old model I built a while ago. I simply primed it, then started applying the rust layers. After the rust dried, I airbrushed the chipping medium – allowed it to dry, then applied the top coat. I’ve included a picture to show how things came out. I’m sure with more practice, the results can be even better.

Fantastic! what a difference this makes to the outcome of your model

  7. Ray

I got this kit because I am just starting out learning the ins and outs of model painting with an air brush. By just starting out I mean this is my first fully air brushed model. I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. The directions were easy to follow and the paints are holding up well to the frequent flips and crashes I’m doing with my RC crawler.

  8. Frequent User

Weathering some locos and scenery for my diorama. Works well, the practise one on an old OO toad wagon encouraged me to try it on a N scale class 57…she looks the part now, grimy, rusting but gamely pulling the branch line autocoach..next job is the autocoach followed by all the rolling stock and some n scale cars. Should keep me occupied for a few weeks! I like the Vallejo products need little thinning for my airbrush and the results are always good..if I haven’t stuffed up!

The rust colors included are fantastic, if you’ve never used chipping medium before it’s really cool and easy to use. Directions with it are ok, I suggest just looking up the videos on youtube if you need more detailed instructions. It’s cheaper to buy this than to buy it all separately. Would buy again.

Just got this product and it looks really interesting to use on my tank models. Can’t wait to use this

  12. Mike

They work ok. Vallejo paints are very rubbery after drying and this doesn’t change that. I use Vallejo almost exclusively. It was easy to apply with an airbrush but the paint can chip in chucks. More suitable for 1/32 and higher out of the bottle. I did make them work better with some thinning but they don’t work for me straight out of the bottle for 1/35 or 1/72. Still, they do work and have a decent effect.

Properly using this you can get some pretty awesome rust effects. You can’t buy these on to thick. With the proper paint technique you can get great results.
