Love this model from Tamiya. Built it before. Super detailed and parts fit perfectly.

  2. Amazon Customer

The price for the kit was excellent plus free delivery. As for the kit itself – every scale modeling fun knows what is Tamiya quality

  3. Jasper Daniels

I had a lot of fun with this one.

Second plane I did from tamiya (first one being the Akutan Japanese zero) during the early months of staying in place. Went on a deep dive to figure out about the f4f Grumman “wildcats”. Tried to find actual photos of these carrier planes and ended up learning a lot about these planes and how they served in the Pacific theatre.

Tried my best to respect the original look of these war birds. I found photos of the planes onboard ships and used them to match for the decals; that they were at sea for long stretches and the type of weathering was mixed with sea salt air.

The only slight issue I had was with the fitting of the landing gear.

I was into model airplanes while in my teens about 60 years ago. I even won several Monogram trophies for my efforts. I was looking for a hobby to suit my advancing age and thought “Why not get back to static models of WW2 aircraft”
Great decision. I chose a F4F-4 Wildcat because it is right in the middle of the Buffalo – Wildcat – Hellcat trio and found the Tamiya 61034 at the Amazon website. I lucked out and got a series 1994 kit which is desirable.
The kit arrived promptly and in good shape. I figured out what paints I needed from the handy color list (the instructions are color-keyed for Tamiya paints) . I ordered them from Amazon and while I awaited delivery, I dug into the kit.
The quality and detail of the plastic parts are excellent. They are straight and clean and easily detach from the frame. The instructions are clear and self explanatory with lots of pictures. I chose the Ranger trim because of the tail stripes. They pretty well date the plane to the late thirties-early forties. Also, the red center circles were short lived because they could be mistaken for Japanese meatballs in poor visibility. All and all, building this airplane was a very pleasant introduction back into the hobby. My paint brushing skills are not what they used to be but I’m sure they will improve. The approach light and landing light jumped off the table and were lost forever so I had to fabricate new ones. I managed to hold onto the gun sight. These parts are LITTLE.
I’m happy with the results of my efforts and would recommend the Tamiya kits without reservation. Just got a Brewster Buffalo to keep my Grumman Wildcat company.
