Amazon Customer –
One of Tamiya’s older type offerings, but still a very good example of a Merkava MK I at an excellent price here on Amazon. With a bit of research, and either some aftermarket or scratch-build details, you can improve on the accurate outlines and the easy assembly Tamiya is famous for. Be sure to search for close-up pics online; and with drybrushing and washes you end up with a nice early Merkava.

Considering this is Tamiya’s kit number 127 in the military miniature series, you know it’s been around for a long time, actually more than 20 years, yet the parts remain crisp in keeping with Tamiya’s reputation for quality.
This kit, the Merkava Mark I, would be suitable as a starter kit for a precocious 10-year-old, or an old modeler like me who loves to take old kits and usingÂ
“Merkava Main Battle Tank MKs I, II & III” (New Vanguard)
bring them up to date, or at least achieve a higher degree of accuracy.
Although crisply molded, this kit contains no photo-etch, although photo-etch details for this model have been around as long as it has; they cost as much as the kit itself. The tracks are standard Tamiya, no separate tracks here. A Google search will turn up lots of help for a first-time modeler or a vet.

The box was opened with rubber band holding it closed. It looks like everything is there but I wont know until I begin build. AND I paid full price!

Very enjoyable build. All parts fitted together beautifully and the instructions are really clear. Take your time with it, read the instructions through at least twice before you start gluing and enjoy.

Having only a little experience building plastic models, I’ve heard about Tamiya’s great reputation for scale model kits, especially 1:35 armor models, and now I understand why. While more on the easier side (about 130 parts), this kit was very fun to build – the instructions were very clear, all parts fit perfectly together and were large and sturdy enough to be handled easily and forgive mistakes. The painting is not too difficult, but you can have a lot of fun weathering. One challenging part was making the antennas from sprues – the instructions say “heat a length of sprue then stretch”. The trick is to heat and pull very gradually. I ended up using a candle, but it smoked up the plastic (still looks OK). Another tip: the tow chain comes straight and needs to be wrapped around the turret basket. It snapped in one place when I tried to do it (glued it back together). I would suggest heating slightly to make it more flexible – I held it next to a light bulb to heat it just a little.
Overall, an excellent, detailed kit of a classic tank that is fun to build even for a less experienced modeler.
