Most of the product arrived intact, but some of the bottles leaked making a mess on the inside of the box and damaged the labels on several others. Abrasions on the outside of the box indicated it had been old stock or was handled roughly. Otherwise, ok.

For painting they are good quality and mix well together. I use it for gunpla as well and it has ideal colors that mix good on gundams. So if your an artist it’s not too thick but not too thin either it’s balanced.

Paints work well for the models I am currently painting. A little disappointed with the droppers and dry out.

I have a love/hate relationship with Vallejo. Vallejo is cheap and easy to get but has some serious drawbacks in what can be used to thin it for airbrush work. I decided to give the starter air set a try as I knew it would need less thinning to function. It thins well with a drop or two of water or non alcohol thinner and sprays well. The color range is limited though. Black, white, gray, red, 3 blues, yellow, a green and the rest is various browns and brownish yellows. If you need browns and yellows this is your set. I’ve never seen so many browns outside of earthtone specific sets.

The first thing to note about buying Vallejo paints from Amazon is that for some reason the listings are not all accurate, which leads to confusion on what you are actually buying. It appears that some listings have the wrong picture and / or description, so what you see or read about may not actually be the information for the set you chose by the title. You can also find different descriptions depending on whether you are using a mobile device or browser to view the item. I can often see the colors in the set listed in the description on the mobile app, but never if I am using a browser, but the mobile listings are not always accurate either.

That said, every purchase I have made I have received the TITLED item, regardless of picture or description. I suggest downloading a catalog from Vallejo which includes their colors at time of publication and the sets they offer with their contents clearly listed, then buy them BY TITLE from Amazon. So far, this has worked for me for several purchases.

As far as the paints go, I was an old fashioned modeler, I insisted on using the old enamel products for years, but they were getting harder to find, and I hated the amount of waste I had if I used an airbrush by the time I used an eye dropper to extract and thin the paint for spraying. Not to mention that thinning the enamels would often times cause a slight change in the actual color that laid down on the model, so if you later did any touch up by brush, or a different coat, it could lead to different shades of paint. So I ended up getting into a few acrylic paints and washes over time for shades I couldn’t find any other way, but then I had to make sure everything was fully cured or sealed before swapping from enamel to acrylic or I would end up with a nasty mess and ruined model.

This all led me to trying this “Model Air” line by Vallejo, and I am sold! They are so easy to spray without the need to thin them down. If I am doing a large surface I will use some Flow Improver to keep the air brush from drying up on me, but I use the recommend 2 drops of improver to 10 drops paint, so it doesn’t change the color at all and is very easy to duplicate. The dropper bottles are awesome, I have MUCH less waste, no more lids drying on the bottle either since they clean easy and and are plastic so the don’t ‘glue’ themselves together. They also dry very fast, so buy the time I am done with the first coat on the entire project the first pieces are typically ready for the second coat. Lastly, they brush well for touch up or small areas too.

I will also note that they have handy storage solutions that work great and help keep your hobby area organized, just be careful when putting them together. And their Primers are great and easy to spray through an airbrush too.

This arrived on time and exactly thebset of colors I was looking for.

  7. ***Phoenix***

The colors shown on the product photos are a bit misleading. I was needing this set for the different brown tones so it did work for my needs. The color selection is limited unless those earthy tones are what you’re needing. The paint sprayed well and I would buy from this brand/line again.

  8. RavynFyre

I almost opted to get the regular Vallejo acrylics and some thinner, but a few videos on youtube convinced me to go with the air paints for airbrushing. Not only are they supposed to work better, but it’s more cost effective, too. I did take the advice of another review and checked every bottle as soon as they arrived, to ensure that none of them were dried out or thickened, and I am glad that I did, because four bottles were either not closed very well, or had clear been opened after being filled, because they were a mess under the cap. I’m sure that if I had just set the paints aside until I had everything here to use them on/with, that there would have been some loss due to drying or leakage.

For the most part, the colors seem true to the color chart provided with the set – I am hoping that the lightness of the Burnt Umber, Mud Brown, and Light Blue are simply due to the fact that my swatches haven’t dried yet. If not, I’ll be able to adjust accordingly and make them work. This set *does* however have a preponderance of earth tones for a basic set. I could have done without one of the five brown/earth tones to get a nice orange or a more vibrant green than “olive” (which looks more dark brown than green, and even the “yellow olive” seems way more like a dark brown than a green, but I haven’t actually painted with them yet, so maybe they show up differently on something besides a color swatch) but with a nice, vibrant yellow and a rich dark blue, maybe I can mix my own green that is closer to a jewel tone than the “greens” provided.

For a “basic” set, this is serviceable, if limited, for all that it comes with 16 colors. The pictures in this listing shows a more greenish tint to the “mud brown”, which is pretty misleading. Once I use these in my airbrush, I will edit to discuss coverage, stick, and leveling. For now, though, I’ll leave it as 5 stars for the rich pigmentation and test viscosity of the paints.
