I would like to add my support to the assessment provided by reviewer Bill. The laser cuts of the wood are precise and the instructions are reasonably clear. However, as Bill notes, the wood itself is of inferior quality and breaks easily and this impedes precise assembly. I use very thin, sharp pins to fasten parts to the plan, but even these can sometimes break the wood. And the pieces can easily break when bending parts into place or even gluing them into position. The poor quality of the balsa is really a disappointment.

In my first comment I noted the poor quality of the wood. I would also note that, on my model at least, the vinyl center spar and gear support is too thick for the openings in the wing spars where it is supposed to fit. Because the wood is of such poor quality it is easy to break these spars when tying to slot the vinyl piece into the spars. On my model, I needed to file the wing spar openings to get the vinyl spar to fit. This is of course risky, as the wood easily breaks and, if you have already covered the wings you can puncture the wing covering. My advice is to delay covering the wing until you are sure that the vinyl spar fits into the wing spars.

This is the first airplane model kit I’ve bought in over about 65 years, My grandson and I will build it shortly. I’m particularly appreciative that the balsa pieces have been precut. I remember having to cut the balsa with the knives and the difficulties of cutting both with and against the grain. I read the instruction set and have learned some new techniques of applying the paper. Perhaps after building this model I’ll come back and add a star to this kit.

Was a gift and he loved it

  4. Jan Janocik

The detail contained in this model and the ease of assembly are reasons enough to buy this model. But the outstanding customer service and product knowledge deserve more than five stars. That is the opinion of my husband who received this model as a gift.

Nice model to work on, like the detail of it.

  6. Richard Young

it is old school and I have spent many hours building this model as I did over 50 years ago with my father

  7. Drew in WV

I made this same model with my dad 30 years ago and decided to make one with my son. Good gosh, the instructions are the same. The big improvement is the laser cutting of the parts – huge improvement over the stamping process they used back in the day! Thanks Guillow!!

  8. Court T

Great product made better by being laser cut!

  9. wroxbro

Excellent kit. The laser cut parts are a real improvement in these aircraft kits!

  10. chiroman

Haven’t assembled it yet so can’t say how well it fits together but so far so good

  11. Bill

High quality kit, laser cut parts fit super!

When I was young I made a P38 Lighning airplane and I think it will be great with this one.

I’ve been building Guillows model planes for over 50 years.
I love their kits. I recently built the Stearman Biplane and the
Focke Wulf 190. I have not yet begun the Spitfire but look forward
To starting it. I fully expect it to be another great model and fun
to build. As usual the kits have top quality plans and materials.
