This is to the high finish that Tamika models do well, plenty of detail. Not the easiest of builds as some of the instructions are not straightforward. However with patience a really good model is built, strongly recommend buying the forks detail up.

As always Tamiya models are highly detailed and accurate replicas of the real thing. I purchased this Yamaha YZF R1M for my Dad’s 60th birthday and he really appreciated it. Spend the extra money and get detailed forks and suspension kit to go with it for that even more realistic look with gold anodised front forks and a yellow rear spring – the box does mention this kit is available too and gives you the kit number do you know what to search for.

The fit on this model is awesome! Lots of cool surprises in the box also. Like masking to paint the patters seen on the box on the farings.
I’m still building mine, but I love this kit so far.

Nice kit by Tamiya but, I have built over 100 models including wooden ships and this one has problems. Some parts don’t fit, instructions can be confusing, instructions don’t match the finished model and instructions don’t match the box cover. NOT typical for the other great kits from Tamiya. Recommend spray paint all required parts not brush on, study instructions carefully and be ready to adjust some parts.

Normally Tamiya kit parts are usually so very easy to fit together but struggled to fit the engine into the front chassis on this model.

This model is pretty close to awesome. Shipped from Japan, I received it just over two weeks from the time of order.
Pros: It includes rubber Bridgestone RS10 tires and small rubber lines and hoses making it look as close to the real thing as possible. Assembly is obviously required, along with painting. Nothing comes pre-painted in this kit. So patience is a must!
Cons: (Attention Perfectionists) Unbeknownst to me, there are TWO optional *not included* parts that (to me) are absolutely crucial to make this model look 100% accurate. These are: Tamiya part number 12681 (Carbon Fiber decal sheet), and Tamiya part number 12684 (Ohlins front fork and yellow rear suspension coil/Ohlins shock absorber). Note: the kit DOES include plastic, non-detailed forks which you can paint yourself. In all honesty the forks/rear suspension aren’t my “deal breaker”, as I could live with painting/detailing them on my own. BUT the CARBON FIBER!!!!!! Without this optional part, the R1M just doesn’t look like the R1M to me. I feel it’s the “make or break” part of this entire build.
While both of these Tamiya “DP” (detail-up part) items are sold separately and can be found on Amazon, just do yourself a favor and order them WITH the model so they all arrive together since they ship from Japan. Otherwise (like me) you’ll have an awesome looking model you just can’t quite put together without it looking just right. Tamiya could honestly just include both optional items and add to the overall price of this kit. I feel it’s a disservice otherwise.
Bottom line: Had these optional parts been included – OR had it been blatantly obvious that they are NOT, this kit would easily merit 5 stars.
Update 12/26/18:
Build complete. First kit I’ve built in about 16 years. It took me exactly two weeks to complete this particular kit. While putting it together I realized that the paint scheme does not match my bike’s year model. I own a 2015 R1M; this kit comes complete with the decals and painting instructions for a 2017 R1M. I failed to realize this key difference at the time of purchase.
It being the only R1M model I’ve been able to find in three years of searching needless to say, I had to costumize my painting and get creative with the included decals to make this model match my 2015 R1M.
Also of note, I cropped the tail end to simulate a fender eliminator kit and I had to get REALLY creative with this kit’s exhaust since I have an SC Project exhaust system on my bike and again, I wanted this to be an exact replica of my bike.
All in all, I had a ton of fun building this kit and loved every minute of it!

This particular model had excellent details throughout. All parts fitted well with little problem although not having a jig to support the model made certain parts quite awkward to fit. Very pleased with finished model and would recommend it to any motor bike enthusiest.
