In the Summer of 2012, I took two of my three grandsons to visit the real USS Iowa, permanently docked in the Los Angeles Harbor. As a birthday present for my five year old grandson, I ordered the Trumpeter model of the USS Iowa from Amazon and built it for him. I found the details of the 1/700 scale model were amazingly good. My nine year old grandson who didn’t see the real USS Iowa saw his cousin’s model of the USS Iowa and wanted one to build. In April 2013, I took him to visit the real USS Iowa, so he would have a greater appreciation for the size of this massive naval ship and the armament. I ordered another Trumpeter model from Amazon, which arrived in a couple of days. My grandson and I are in the process of painting the model. He is learning patience, which is needed to build good model. I also purchased the book “Iowa-Class Battleships” from Amazon. It served as a painting guide for the model ship. The instructions that came with the model gives some painting directions, but not enough to give the ship the details I wanted. The 16 inch gun turrets rotate, but the 5 inch gun turrets don’t. This model could probably be built by a 12 year old and older without help. I think a 12 year old would like more moving parts on the model. I helped my sons build models like this over 30 years ago and I built model ships when I was a kid over 50 years ago. The Trumpeter 1/700 US Battleship BB-61 Iowa 1984 model brought back some good memories for me and is giving my grandson good memories of his own.
