I started building Guillow’s balsa models about a million years ago, as a pre-teen. They were fun, but, like most other modelers, I moved on to 1/2A control line, large control line, then radio control. Eventually I kinda grew up, and went to work full time, had kids, blah blah blah. These days I’m a retired old fart, returning to my roots, and started building Guillows models again as a hobby. Unlike the olden days, I’m in no rush to build. Instead I’m taking my sweet time, enjoying the build, and the small sense of accomplishment that goes along with it.

This is a sweet kit, at least for me. It’s a nice model of a funky old prop plane, a good size model, and just a pleasure to put together. Yeah, there are a few steps that are either lost in the edits, or literally hidden in the fine print. I had to backtrack (slightly) twice. Gradually my old skill set returned; things came easier.

I’m done with everything except covering, final assembly, and trimming. And although I believe it’ll fly quite well, I don’t really care if it does, it has served me well already; icing on the cake if it does takeoff and fly away.

Anyway, I almost feel like I just finished a good book, it was that fun for me. That said, like finishing a good book, I’m afraid nothing will compare. I look at the Guillows models available, and they just don’t seem the same to me as this cherry little Fairchild. I’ll probably build a Dumas kit next; they have some interesting ones, like the Curtis Hawk and Beech Staggerwing.

There is obvious grade inflation on Amazon; not their fault, but seems like people either love something (5 stars), or hate it (one star). I usually give things three or four stars (if they do what I expect), or one star (if they don’t meet expectations, or if the Chinese make it… which is almost everything on Amazon). THIS IS A GENUINE 5 STAR!

I recommend this model; I suspect you’ll love it!

    Great flying plane.
    Not too hard to build.

  3. JVDUB

    Very good kit

  4. Jon Currier

Many parts in this model did not seem to be the right scale, the propeller for example was far too small. My 15 y.o. experienced model builder was really disappointed with this.

I have built a fair number of Guillows models to date, ( 8 ) and most have been well designed. Some, amazingly well. This particular one has some quirky design elements and requires a fair amount of guesswork at times. Although I believe I ended up with a flyable model, I was not really happy with the final product.

  6. Bob Cox

Very nice kit, every thing so far is great

  7. TrutherLins

    Perfect conversion to RC
