These kits bring back memories of when I used to build Peck-Polymers peanut scale planes with my father. In continuing tradition I purchased this to do the same with my 9 year old son. Everything about building these are as I remembered, and my son is crawling the walls to want to finish it and fly it. The only criticism I would have, and the reason for a 4 star versus 5 star, is that the blueprints leave a lot of guess work. Upon completing the main parts, wing, stab, elevator, you are left with a semi-vague blueprint of the fuselage where it outlines the main form. After much time and many left over parts, I figured out on the other side of the blue print there was a completed picture with micro part numbers listed all over the design. I was able to determine where some of the parts go from this picture, but others left me scratching my head.
Overall these kits are a blast to build and to share the experience with your kids, it’s priceless. If you don’t have any experience with modeling such as this, I would definitely suggest a youtube video to get acclimated.

I bought this kit as Guillows was converting their 500 series from die cut to laser cut. I got a die cut model, which is not nearly as nice as laser cut. Kind of miss glueing broken parts back together, sanding and trimming everything with laser instead of die, but I’ll get over it. The precision and convenience of laser cutting is simply astounding. My big complaint about the kit was its supply of 1/16″ square stringers. Often times, they’re miss-cut, being too narrow and too wide. This particular batch was from such weak balsa that they continually broke. Fortunately, I had extras from previous projects. Never throw them out. If you complain to Guillows, they will cheerfully send you more at no charge. If you’re not going to fly the model, paint the assemblies before covering with oil or acrylic paint and lightly sand the outer surfaces. This greatly strengthens the model. The paint raises the grain, which is sanded down, making for a smother covering job. Not sealing the balsa and sanding afterwards will cause the grain to rise when you glue on the tissue, making for a bumpy covering job.

    Recensito precedentemente come non pervenuto.
E’ arrivato, anche se con una decina di giorni di ritardo, il pacco schiacciato ma all’interno tutto è risultato integro…per fortuna
    Prodotto come descritto.

I loved building this model. Well done Guillows for providing a good quality kit at a low price.

  5. Thomas Beard

I was very pleasantly surprised to get a laser cut version of this model for such a good price. The quality of the wood is excellent and with a little bit of trimming and sanding this should be an excellent flyer

  6. Ralph

Didn’t realize this was a laser cut kit when I got it. Very happy about that as they are such cleaner easier kits to assemble. What else is there to say? If you have done one of these kits before than you know what to expect. If you haven’t assembled one then know this is a full BALSA wood kit that takes effort to assemble . I have read reviews of people getting these and then being angry that they got a box full of wood. Well…… can’t really say much about that. Oh and the price I paid was 16 or something so not a bad price at all. When I got it they were hard to find and lots of places seemed to be price gouging the guillows kits. Glad I found it as it has helped pass a couple hours. Now to see if I can get it to fly a little lighter than the last brick I built.

I have had a few models from this seller and all have been worth the money.

  8. J.B.Edwards

Easy to understand instuction’s and everything you need is included.

  9. Lbolt

Nice starter model, pretty much the same as the ones i used to build 40 years ago- new kits are laser cut, not stamped out, this makes it 100% better to work with- no cracked or broken parts to start with

Almost impossible to find dope to paint on model, and tissue though

Not at that stage yet, but will need to experiment with alternatives for that

  10. roger pryse

the kit was easy to assemble and looked very good when finished

  11. John

This is actually the second time I have purchased and built this model. I had so much fun building the first one I almost immediately bought the second one and started building it also. very high quality model and all of the cutouts are laser cut now so you don’t have to worry about the pieces breaking as you try and remove them like you did back in the old days.

I recently (just in the last 2 months) began building these balsa models after a 45 year hiatus. I’ve made about 6 of them so far, and this one is one of the best. The parts were very accurately cut, fit together really well, and this thing flies killer!! It flies nice and straight, and at the end of flight, it curves off to the left and lands nicely in the grass. I use a large steel washer on the nose cone and glue it on, and then mount the prop directly to it. That adds just the right amount of weight to keep it from going up and stalling, and makes a nice, smooth flight. Very nice model.

This product was excellent. I had a little bit of difficulty trying to fit the plastic parts to the front former. But the laser cut parts are a vast improvement over the die-cut pieces that you had to cut out of the frame. I would recommend putting a steel washer under the thrust button for the prop instead of using clay to trim the airplane. The airplane flew very well. Overall it was a fun build and a lot of fun for the price point.
